HÀ NỘI – Hà Nội’s People’s Committee has approved, in principle, the construction of 1,000 public toilets to serve the local populace and tourists visiting the city.

As many as 50 public water-filtering machines and 200 stone chairs will be placed in public spaces in the coming period.

The committee said the city has been facing a shortage of toilets for years, while existing toilets are poorly maintained. The plan to construct public toilets will help resolve the problem.

The project’s investor will be asked to use sustainable and eco-friendly building materials. The committee required the investor to study designs that are best suited to the city’s culture and architecture.

This investor will be in charge of operating and maintaining these toilets.

The municipal Department of Construction will work with the relevant authorities to conduct surveys on where to place new public toilets in the city.

Figures from the Department of Construction show that the city has some 340 public toilets spread over 10 urban districts and the Sơn Tây Township.

Among them, 263 toilets are located in alleys, serving people who reside in the old living quarters and residential areas. The rest have been installed along streets and next to bus stops, parks and recreation spaces.

On average, each district has 30 public restrooms, while the demand for them is increasing. – VNS
