QUẢNG TRỊ — Mass fish deaths have been reported from a reservoir built to collect rainwater in this central province’s Đông Hà Town, emitting a foul odour to nearby areas.
According to the town’s department of urban environment and works, their workers have been collecting dead fish weighing some 600kg every day for the past 10 days.
Residents in the town said they discovered fish dying nearly a month ago, and they have been suffering from the stench ever since.
At the site, black coloured water was found pouring into the reservoir from a number of holes in the culvert.
Authorities in ward 5, where the reservoir is located, said they have reported this to the town asking for checks on industrial facilities based in the area.
On Wednesday, the town’s environment monitoring agency came to the site taking water samples for a test, in an attempt to find the cause for the pollution in the water of the reservoir. — VNS
