TÂY NINH – Locals in this southern province have been asked to return the land on which they have illegally encroached to forestry projects, the provincial Agriculture and Rural Development Department said.

More than 1,000ha from the two projects of Dầu Tiếng Preventive Forest in Tân Châu District and Chàng Riềng Cultural and Historical Forest in Tân Biên District still need to be reclaimed from the total land encroached upon since 2009.

The locals have used the land for growing rubber trees, cassava and developing orchards.

The department has asked the provincial People’s Committee to make a list of encroachers that need to be dealt with under the Law on Forest Protection and Development.

In cases where encroachers ignore the directive to return the land, the local authority will destroy the orchards or trees to return the land to its purpose of growing forests.

Since 2009, the provincial authority has reclaimed more than 3,000ha of preventive forests from the local people. — VNS
