KON TUM – The Kon Tum People’s Committee has proposed construction of a highway from the Bờ Y International Border Gate in the province to Pleiku City in Gia Lai Central Highlands Province.

According to the proposal made to the Ministry of Transport, the highway will be built under the build-operate-transfer model and the total investment will be VNĐ13.2 trillion (US$586.6 million).

The highway will have a designated speed of 100kph and six lanes, and will be 22.5m wide and 111km long.

The highway will be a part of the Hồ Chí Minh Highway, passing the Central Highlands area.

The leaders of the Kon Tum People’s Committee said that at present, a large number of vehicles and goods from Thailand, Myanmar and Laos were being transported to Việt Nam via the Bờ Y International Border Gate, especially after the country joined the ASEAN Economic Community and signed the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

The Hồ Chí Minh Highway from Kon Tum Province to Đà Nẵng Central City, on the other hand, had deteriorated and did not meet the actual demand of transporting goods, according to the committee.

To meet the demand of transporting goods between countries in the ASEAN Economic Community, the provincial committee proposed to build the highway and scheduled the project’s completion before 2020. — VNS
