ĐÀ NẴNG – The trial installation of security camera systems in the central city of Đà Nẵng has helped the city to discover and prevent hundreds of crimes.
After six months of use, the police detected 460 cases with nearly 1,000 people involved, mostly relating to robbery, gambling, fighting and drug use, the city’s police reported at a meeting held yesterday to review the security cameras.
Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Huỳnh Đức Thơ said the camera system had initially contributed to ensuring public order, security and traffic safety as well as helping to protect property, lives, organisations and businesses.
The number of criminal cases was expected to drop significantly after all security cameras were installed, he said.
The city plans to install security camera systems at 3,296 sites on streets and outside of living quarters, trading centres, industrial parks, markets, restaurants, hotels, bars and offices in the second quarter of the year.
The total cost is estimated at VNĐ13.5 billion (US$605,000) and will be mobilised from individuals and businesses.
The city will also invest nearly VNĐ22 billion ($936,000) in installing security cameras at 857 other public sites.
According to the city’s information and communications department, the camera systems will help public services respond quickly to traffic accidents or public disorder.
The city has already installed five camera systems at more than 4,700 sites where there are traffic lights in order to monitor traffic accidents and violations. They were also installed in popular tourism areas. — VNS
