HCM CITY —  The cable-stayed Thủ Thiêm 4 and Cần Giờ bridges are proposed to be built in HCM City at a cost of more than VNĐ17 trillion (US$717 million).

The Department of Transport has petitioned the People's Committee to submit the proposals to the  People's Council for approval at the 2024 mid-year session.

Thủ Thiêm 4 bridge will connect the Thủ Thiêm New Urban Area in Thủ Đức city with District 7, and cost around VNĐ6 trillion ($253 million).

To be constructed under the build-operate-transfer model, it will span over 2km and have six lanes and sidewalks on either side.

The Cần Giờ Bridge connecting the Cần Giờ and Nhà Bè districts will replace the Bình Khánh Ferry.

The 7.3km bridge will have six lanes, cost of more than VNĐ11 trillion ($464 million) and be built under the public-private partnership model.

The city People’s Committee said the Bình Khánh Ferry has become overloaded due to the increase in number of passengers, who have to spend at least 30 minutes to cross the Nhà Bè River.

The bridge is also expected to boost tourism and economic development in Cần Giờ.

The pre-feasibility study has been completed for the two bridges, and their construction is expected to begin in April 2025.

The transport department will also submit the investment proposal for upgrading a section of Vĩnh Lộc Street near the Vĩnh Lộc Industrial Park in Bình Chánh District, widening Đỗ Xuân Hợp Street in Thủ Đức city and building the Thanh Đa embankment in Bình Thạnh District. — VNS
