ĐÀ NẴNG — A series of key traffic, housing and health care infrastructure commenced construction in early 2024 for soon operation in 2025, making Đà Nẵng a ‘green and smart’ city in central Việt Nam in 2030.

Chairman of the city’s people’s committee Lê Trung Chinh joined the work resumption event of the upgraded project on national road No 14B – a key traffic connection of the National Highway No 1A, the Hồ Chí Minh Trail, the East-West Economic Corridor, the south and east of the city.

Chinh said the project is be one of the most anticipated key projects that helps create smooth traffic on the multi-vehicle national road and railway system.

He said the project will also offer a rendezvous for logistics service, deep-sea port, industrial zones and hi-tech parks, as well as promoting links among Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and Việt Nam via the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC).

National road No 14B, which connects Đà Nẵng City’s Tiên Sa Port to Thạnh Mỹ Town in Quảng Nam Province with total length of 73km, is having a 7.58km section in Đà Nẵng City upgraded at a cost of VNĐ800 billion (US$32 million) from 2023.

The road was designed with six lanes including two mixed vehicle traffic, allowing max speed at 80km per hour. It would be completed in 2025.

Last year, the city already opened the Hòa Phước-Hòa Khương section of a ring-road project with funds from the World Bank, easing the city’s inner congestion and linking with road No 14B and the Hồ Chí Minh Trail.

Also starting construction in 2024, the city began the 1.4km Quảng Đà Bridge project, including the 200m bridge section spanning the Yên River, to connect Hòa Vang District and Điện Bàn Town in Quảng Nam Province.

The bridge and entryway project will be built with VNĐ274 billion ($10.9 million), paving smooth links from Quang Nam to No 14B, Tien Sa Port, EWEC, Đà Nẵng Hi-tech Park, on-going construction Liên Chiểu Port and Kim Liên railway cargo station.

The project was scheduled to be put into operation in March of 2025.

In expanding healthcare service for central and Central Highlands region, the city commenced construction of the second stage of the Paediatrics and Obstetrics Hospital with an investment of VNĐ789 billion ($31.6 million).

The 600-bed hospital, one of the largest of its kind in central Việt Nam, was downgraded and overloaded after 10 years of operation. It will be upgraded to 1,350 beds including a high tech medical centre service with modern equipment and facilities.

The upgraded hospital would provide healthcare for 1,500 patients including 750 in-patients each day.

Đà Nẵng currently has 12 hospitals with 1,000 doctors and more than 620 consulting rooms and medical care centres, but the system was overloaded as it provided service to central cities and provinces throughout the region.

Two more social housing projects began in 2024 including apartments for People with Special Contributions to the country and athletes.

The first 209 flats for People with Special Contributions to the country in Ngũ Hành Sơn District would be completed and handed over this October. The city is building another 200-flat apartment project in Hải Châu District, scheduled for official operation in 2025.

Đà Nẵng city at the same time started upgrading the overloaded Thọ Quang fishing port with an allocated fund of VNĐ250 billion ($10 million).

The port was built as a regional fishery logistics centre and a storm-shelter location for 800 high-capacity fishing vessels.

The project will build new piers to host more fishing boats and a waste treatment plant, as well as a trade centre to serve 3,000 fishermen and traders.

The biggest fishing dock in the central region could handle 17,600 fishing trawlers and 130,000 tonnes of fish and seafood.

The port zone is home to 23 seafood processing plants and 11 shipyards.
