HÀ NỘI — A workshop themed "Open Science from Perspectives" was held on May 18 to discuss and promote the significance of science and technology in today's development.

The event was organised by the International Centre for Mathematical Research and Training (ICRTM) and the Vingroup Innovation Fund (VINIF), in collaboration with the International Centre for Physics (ICP), the Information Centre for Documentation (ISI), and the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST).

The programme is an activity to echo Vietnam Science and Technology Day and the spirit of UNESCO's "Recommendations on Open Science", shedding light on open science in the community.

In the age of digital transformation, open science is a crucial topic with a variety of views, according to Phan Thị Hà Dương, deputy director of the ICRTM.

This is because knowledge is no longer just limited to academics or technology but now has a direct, immediate impact on many enterprises and economies. But for many people, the idea of open science is still extremely nebulous.

Phan Thị Hà Dương, deputy director of the ICRTM, said that open science is an important topic and has many different perspectives in the digital transformation era, as knowledge is no longer confined to academia or technology but has a direct, rapid impact on many businesses and economies. However, the concept of open science is still quite vague to many people.

There are many criteria to form an open science, according to UNESCO, including the main parts of open data, an open publishing system, an open science infrastructure, open educational resources, open hardware, and open software sources, openness to diversity of knowledge, open assessment, and open access for social groups.

One of the first international agencies to encourage this new trend towards equitable access to scientific knowledge was UNESCO.

Việt Nam has taken the first steps to pay attention to this recommendation after the Ministry of Science and Technology hosted the workshop "Open Science - UNESCO Recommendations: Opportunities and Challenges for Vietnam" on Octorber 20, 2021.

This is a new concept and it will take time for the scientific community in particular and society in general to better understand the trends in the world and find reasonable regulations for the country.

The workshop "Open Science from Perspectives" featured lectures on subject matter connected to open science.

In particular, the lecture "Open scientific data" by Hồ Tú Bảo from the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics highlighted the importance and benefits of open data systems in scientific research, especially in the current era of science and technology development and change.

He said that an open science brings harmonious benefits to various industries, ensuring integrity, fairness and equality in data and knowledge sharing. — VNS
