HCM CITY — The Việt Nam National University-HCM City (VNU-HCM) needs to make breakthroughs in the quality of training, research and technology transfer to provide high-quality human resources for the whole country, especially for the southern provinces including HCM City, deputy head of the Party Central Committee's Organisation Commission, Hoàng Đăng Quang, said at a meeting held on Thursday (April 20).

Quang and a delegation had a working day with leaders of the VNU-HCM, which aims to be among the leading higher education institutions in Asia.

He highly appreciated the school’s strong determination and efforts gaining positive results in past years, affirming its position in the Vietnamese higher education system and the higher education world university rankings.

He emphasised that the VNU-HCM has a big mission. “Therefore, its member universities, including those with campuses in other provinces, need to further strengthen the integration process, to create a good impression as one of the leading higher education institutions in the region and the world,” he said.

The school needs to have a specific action plan with a suitable roadmap to turn into a leading unit for training and scientific research in Asia, and a convergence of Vietnamese culture and knowledge, science, technology and innovation.

He asked the school to focus on improving the quality and effectiveness of university administration, creating a breakthrough in training both in programmes and scale, and enrollment methods.

It needs to build an urban area, contributing to its stature as a large research and training centre in the country, he said.

It also needs to focus on fostering political theory training for cadres, strengthening Party building, and developing party members, especially among students.

Vũ Hải Quân, director of VNU-HCM, said the school has gradually asserted its leading position, achieving many positive and impressive results.

“The school plays a key role in training and fostering high-quality human resources for the city and the southern region,” he said.

The school is building a plan to implement its target of becoming a leading higher education institution in Asia.

The plan will include building an innovation centre, implementing favourable policies to attract and foster talents, developing education programmes with an interdisciplinary approach, and promoting university autonomy.

In recent years, the school’s political and ideological education has undergone great changes with many meaningful activities inspiring patriotism and national pride for all cadres, Party members and students.

From August 2020 to now, the Party Committee of the school has admitted 314 new Party members. Nearly 50 per cent of the total number of new Party members are students.

The number of admitted Party members who are students increased significantly from 28.4 per cent in 2020 to 61.3 per cent in 2022.
