HÀ NỘI — A ceremony was held in Hà Nội on Saturday honouring the dedication and sacrifices made by 19 young Vietnamese people.

Addressing the award ceremony, President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc said that the Party and the State always pay special attention to encouraging young talent, and have issued many policies and guidelines in this regard.

The outstanding young award winners included a doctor dedicated to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, a police officer tackling drug crimes and Miss Grand International 2021 Nguyễn Thúc Thùy Tiên.

Receiving the award, Captain Lê Xuân Nam, 33, who works for the Drug Crimes Investigation Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, said he has made many sacrifices in his work.

Nam said that although the work was difficult and dangerous, he always devoted himself to the peace of the country.

Also at the ceremony, Lê Phước Hồng Văn, a patient recovering from COVID-19 in HCM City, said that she was helped by a doctor named Bách so that she could return to her family.

Văn had not seen the doctor's face, because medical staff wore protective clothes and masks. She wanted to finally meet the doctor to say thanks for his dedication.

Doctor Đỗ Doãn Bách, from the Cardiovascular Institute under the Bạch Mai Hospital, was then introduced on stage. Bách is one of the exemplary young Vietnamese people honoured at the ceremony.

Văn recognised doctor Bách's eyes and they hugged each other like family members. Văn was overcome with emotion.

Bách said that when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in HCM City, he worked at field hospital No 16, which treated patients in serious condition. Of whom, Văn was in a critical state that seemed to be insurmountable.

“Văn had just given birth and was on dialysis. After being weaned off the ventilator and taking a lot of sedation, she was very panicked. I know that spirituality is a valuable medicine for patients at this time, so I encouraged her and helped her connect with her family. After that, she escaped death and it was our precious 'treasure'," Bách said.

President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc lauded the work of the Hồ Chí Minh Communist Youth Union (HCYU) in promoting good examples, saying many of its campaigns have been launched successfully.

He said hundreds of young people have been honoured in the Vietnam Outstanding Young Faces Award over the past 25 years.

President Phúc praised the youngsters for their contributions to building a strong and prosperous Việt Nam, as well as the youth union for its support for young people, expressing his hope that the awardees will work harder to become role models for Vietnamese youth.

The President also asked the HCYU Central Committee to further its coordination with other agencies to reform operations, thus promoting emulation movements.

Young people should be supported to bring into full play their innovations, improve their knowledge and step up the application of scientific-technological advances, meeting requirements in the new situation, President Phúc said.

He urged ministries, agencies, Party Committees and administrations to roll out mechanisms, policies and measures in order to encourage talent, and asked for coordination of organisations, individuals, businesses and educational institutions in these efforts.
