HÀ NỘI —  Police on Sunday launched criminal proceedings against Đinh La Thăng, former chairman of the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam), for suspected violations at Petrochemical and Bio-Fuel Joint Stock Company – a subsidiary of this group.

Thăng, born in 1960, is being investigated for “violating regulations on investment in construction, causing serious consequences” under Article 224 of the Penal Code.

The same day, the Ministry of Public Security also launched criminal proceedings against and searched the house of Trần Thị Bình, former deputy director general of PetroVietnam, on the same charges. She is currently under house arrest.

This was the latest move by police probing the Phú Thọ ethanol factory of the Petrochemical and Bio-Fuel JSC.

In 2018, Thăng, former Politburo member, Minister of Transport and Secretary of the HCM City’s Party’s Committee, has already been given a total of 30 years in prison for his involvement in two other cases at PetroVietnam. — VNS
