HÀ NỘI – Deputy Minister of Defence Nguyễn Chí Vịnh had separate meetings with Singaporean and Chinese ministers of Defence Ng Eng Hen and Chang Wanquan respectively on the sidelines of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) Retreat yesterday in Singapore.
Senior Lieutenant-General Vịnh told Hen that Việt Nam would support Singapore in hosting military and defence conferences in 2018. In reply, Hen said Singapore appreciated Việt Nam’s contribution to ASEAN’s defence and military co-operative mechanisms.
At the meeting with the Chinese minister, Vịnh said the Vietnamese Defence Ministry wants to strengthen ties between Military Regions 1, 2 and 3 of Việt Nam and the southern military zone of China, between Viet Nam’s National Defence Academy and China’s National Defence University, as well as between some Vietnamese academies and Chinese partners.
Chang said bilateral relations grew positively in 2017 with mutual visits by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Việt Nam Nguyễn Phú Trọng and General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Xi Jinping.
He expressed his belief that in 2018, relations between the two countries, including the two armies, will continue to develop through co-operation activities agreed by their leaders, including exchanging high-level delegations.
He also asked for further coordination to enhance Việt Nam-China border defence friendship exchanges, particularly the upcoming fifth exchange, so that this mechanism will reap more and more substantive outcomes. — VNS
