Self-nominated City candidates win

Two out of four self-nominated candidates contesting elections to the HCM City People’s Council for the 2016-21 term have won.

HCM CITY — Two out of four self-nominated candidates contesting elections to the HCM City People’s Council for the 2016-21 term have won.

The two are Lê Nguyễn Minh Quang, general director of Bachy Sholetanche Việt Nam, and Trần Quang Thắng, head of the HCM City Institute for Economic Research and Management.

The HCM City Election Committee announced yesterday morning that Quang polled 62.74 percent of the votes and Thắng, 66.92 percent.  

Of the 105 members elected, city People’s Committee Chairman Nguyễn Thành Phong got the highest percentage of votes -- 78.75 percent.

Other city leaders also got strong support from voters. Nguyễn Thị Quyết Tâm, chairwoman of the People’s Council, got 77.74 of the votes.

Tất Thành Cang, deputy secretary of the Party Committee, polled 68.1 percent and Trần Vĩnh Tuyến, deputy chairman of the People’s Committee, polled 68.4 percent.

The winners included several journalists.

Tăng Hữu Phong, editor-in-chief of Tuổi Trẻ (Youth) newspaper, was voted to the council with 60.23 percent of the votes.

Nguyễn Tấn Phong, editor-in-chief of Sài Gòn Giải Phóng (Liberated Sài Gòn), Nguyễn Thị Tố Trâm of Người Lao Động (Labourer) and Nguyễn Trọng Trí, deputy director of the Voice of HCM City, were also elected.

According to Trương Thị Ánh, deputy chairwoman of the People’s Council, who announced the election results, seven members of the new council are not in the Communist Party, 33 others have been re-elected, 15 are aged under 35, and 46 are women.
