New Government leaders approved at National Assembly's extraordinary session

Three new Deputy Prime Ministers and two ministers were approved on Monday, alongside a new Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court and new Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuracy.

HÀ NỘI — The National Assembly on Monday afternoon has approved the Government's proposal for the selection of three new Deputy Prime Ministers – Nguyễn Hoà Bình, Hồ Đức Phớc and Bùi Thanh Sơn, for the 2021-26 term – at the extraordinary session on personnel matters in Hà Nội.

Following this development, the Government leadership for the term comprises Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính and five Deputy Prime Ministers (three new ones alongside Trần Hồng Hà and Lê Thành Long).

Nguyễn Hoà Bình, 66, from the central province of Quảng Ngãi, has served as the Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court of Việt Nam since June 2016.

Hồ Đức Phớc, 61, from the central Nghệ An Province, was Auditor General of the State Audit Office since 2016, before assuming the role of Minister of Finance in April 2021.As a local leader, he acted as Nghệ An’s People’s Council Chairman and Party Secretary from March 2013 to April 2016.

Bùi Thanh Sơn, 62, from the capital city of Hà Nội, has been serving as the Minister of Foreign Affairs since April 2021, following many positions in the ministry, including standing deputy minister since January 2016.

Hồ Đức Phớc will continue to serve as the finance minister until the parliament approves a succeeding one, while Bùi Thanh Sơn will serve as both Deputy PM and the foreign minister.

Trần Lưu Quang was officially relieved from the Deputy PM position, as he will serve as head of the Party's Central Economic Commission.

In the same session, the parliament also approved two new ministers, along with the heads of two top judicial bodies.

Khánh Hòa Province’s Party Secretary Nguyễn Hải Ninh and Yên Bái Province’s Party Secretary Đỗ Đức Duy have been respectively approved as the new Minister of Justice and Minister of Natural Environment and Resources.

Ninh was the deputy chief of the Central Party Office from March 2019, before being assigned the role of Khánh Hòa Province's Party Secretary for the term 2020-25.

Lê Thành Long, the previous justice minister has been appointed as a Deputy Prime Minister at the NA’s seventh session in June. He had held both positions before the NA relieved him from the role of Minister of Justice on Monday.

Duy was the Deputy Minister of Construction in 2015, before assuming the role of Yên Bái Province’s Deputy Party Secretary in 2017 and then Party Secretary in September 2020.

Lê Minh Trí, Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuracy, was appointed to the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court in place of his predecessor Nguyễn Hoà Bình.

Nguyễn Huy Tiến, Vice Party Secretary of the Supreme People's Procuracy, succeeds Trí as the Prosecutor General. — VNS
