Top leader lauds outgoing Sri Lankan Ambassador’s contributions to bilateral ties

HÀ NỘI — Party General Secretary and President Tô Lâm has commended outgoing Sri Lankan Ambassador to Việt Nam Sajeewa Umanga Mendis for his pivotal role in developing the bilateral ties during his tenure of office.

At a reception in Hà Nội on Friday for the diplomat, the top leader said Việt Nam always values its traditional friendship with Sri Lanka that spans nearly 55 years of diplomatic relations.

Affirming that mutual trust forms a solid foundation to further improve the effectiveness of the bilateral ties, he expressed his desire to advance the relationship to better meet the interests and aspirations of the two countries’ people.

While acknowledging that trade ties have yet to reach their full potential, Party General Secretary and President Tô Lâm called for concerted efforts to boost economic cooperation, particularly in agriculture which plays a crucial role in improving local livelihoods.

He suggested increasing people-to-people exchanges, as well as collaboration in culture, education, and Buddhism, areas rich with shared cultural and historical significance.

Highlighting the importance of Southeast Asia and South Asia, he said the two nations should continue sharing strategic development issues and mutual support at global and regional forums.

The leader hoped that, regardless of his future roles, the ambassador would cherish his memories of Việt Nam and continue to work toward strengthening the bilateral relations.

Umanga Mendis, for his part, said the people of Sri Lanka always respect and admire President Hồ Chí Minh who led the Vietnamese nation through the most challenging times.

He thanked the Vietnamese Government for its continuous support in helping Sri Lanka overcome economic difficulties and backing its stance at global and regional forums.

The Ambassador affirmed that, regardless of his future roles, he will further contribute to the lasting friendship and cooperation between the two nations. — VNS
