HCM CITY — The HCM City Department of Culture and Tourism has proposed building a new museum as part of the city’s master plan for socio-economic development.

The city’s resolution during the ninth Party Congress included the museum proposal in its investment priorities in the 2011-2015 period, as part of the master plan.

The eight-hectare museum will be located inside the Ethnic Historical and Cultural Park in District 9.

It will cost VNĐ1,43 trillion (US$61.4 billion) funded by the state budget.

The current HCM City Museum located at 65 Lý Tự Trọng Street in District 1 was set up on August 12, 1978 in a building constructed in 1890.

The museum, which needs repairs, will be restored soon.

As one of seven leading museums of the city, the HCM City Museum contains 374,000 documents and objects featuring the history and development of the city, and the cultural and social life of it residents.

The museum organises 30-50 mobile exhibitions each year to serve people in rural districts in HCM City and neighbouring provinces.

It also organises exhibitions featuring the history, culture and arts of countries like Japan, Ukraine and Italy.

The museum welcomes an average of 400,000 Vietnamese and foreign visitors every year.

In 2016, the museum was recognised as one of Việt Nam’s must-see destinations by the Việt Nam Tourism Administration. — VNS
