HÀ NỘI — Five French and one Vietnamese movie on fashion are being screened at the French Cultural Centre (L’Espace) from September 24 to October 2 in celebration of Paris Fashion Week. 

Five iconic French movies on fashion including Paris Couture, Jean-Paul Gaultier At Work, Coco Before Chanel, The Drawings of Yves Saint-Laurent, The Secret World of Haute Couture, and a Vietnamese movie, The Tailor, will be shown for cinema enthusiasts and fashionistas.

A talkshow following the screening of The Secret World of Haute Couture, with the theme Fashion & More will be held next Monday, with guest Bui Hong Hanh from Christian Louboutin in Việt Nam and Vu Lan Chi from Chez Vu and Chez Cham.

While the 52-minute documentary Paris Couture by director Jean Lauritano depicts the extraordinary revival of Parisian haute couture in the 25 years after World War II marked by Dior’s New Look, Givenchy’s elegance, Chanel’s style and Balenciaga’s sophistication, Jean-Paul Gaultier At Work features the renowned French haute couture and fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier.

The 90-minute romantic comedy The Tailor by director and producer Ngô Thanh Vân will immerse audiences in the culture and lifestyle of Saigon as well as the history of áo dài (Vietnamese traditional dress). The movie won Best Feature Film at the prestigious Golden Kite Awards in April.

Coco Before Chanel, a 2009 biographical drama film is one of the highlights of the screening event. It stars Amelie and The Da Vinci Code star Audrey Tautou, detailing the early life of the French fashion designer Coco Chanel.

The Drawings of Yves Saint-Laurent by director Jalil Lespert is a discovery of the genius behind one of the greatest fashion designers of the 20th century through thousands of his extraordinary fashion sketches. Cinema goers will get an insight into his life and career through the words of his friends and colleagues.

The Secret World of Haute Couture is a TV documentary directed by Margy Kinmonth which follows her journey from Paris to New York City and California where she meets some haute couture clientele and the world-famous designers involved. The film was first aired on the UK’s BBC Two in 2007.

Paris Fashion Week 2018 is set to be held at d’Evreux Hotel, Place Vendome, Paris, on Tuesday. It is part of the global "Big 4" fashion weeks, the others being London Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week. — VNS
