HÀ NỘI — A joint venture between Hà Nội Export-Import Company (Geleximco) and International Transportation and Trading Joint Stock Company (ITC) has proposed building a logistics centre and Cái Mép Hạ habour in Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu Province’s Phú Mỹ Commune.

According to the proposal, the logistics centre which is under Cái Mép - Thị Vải port complex would cover an area of 1,000ha and the habour could cover 105ha. They would require total investment of around VNĐ30.6 trillion (US$1.31 billion). The project is expected to create jobs for some 15,000 to 20,000 people.

The project’s target is to provide sea port services and goods storage in bond warehouses, frozen warehouses and others with a capacity of three million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) per year.

Cái Mép – Thị Vải is a deep-water port which could receive large container vessels of up to 20,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT), carrying 18,000 TEU capacity and capable of international goods transport.

Investors said the project would be a closed complex to help reduce customs and import-export fees and contribute to the country’s economic development, especially in the southern area and the province’s industrial parks.

The chairman of provincial People’s Committee Nguyễn Văn Trình asked the joint venture to complete the investment plan for the project and submit it to the authorities for approval. 

Cái Mép-Thị Vải port complex is one of the key ports in the region. The port system is one of only 19 in the world capable of handling 190,000 DWT vessels.

The province wants to increase the capacity of its seaports, improve international shipment services and achieve throughput capacity of more than 100 million.

By 2020, the province is expected to have 18 port operators and 219 logistics companies. — VNS
