CẦN THƠ — The 4th Vietnam International Shrimp Industry Technology Expo (VietShrimp 2023) began in the Mekong Delta city of Cần Thơ on April 12, featuring 200 pavilions of 150 local and foreign businesses and organisations.

On display are breeds, feed, medicines, vaccine products and a range of technology serving the shrimp industry. Exhibitors are operating in fields related to the aquaculture sector and the shrimp industry.

Symposiums will be also held offering a venue for farmers, businesses, and experts to share experiences and discuss orientations for developing the sector in the future, further improving the quality of the shrimp production chain.

The shrimp industry has played an important role in Việt Nam's seafood export sector during the past five decades, making up between 45 and 50 per cent of the country’s total annual aquatic export value.

Việt Nam has become one of the leading shrimp exporters in the world with an export value accounting for 13-14 per cent of the global shrimp export value. Last year, Việt Nam raked in US$4.3 billion from exporting shrimp, up 11 per cent year-on-year. Vietnamese shrimp products have been sold at 108 markets.

The shrimp export turnover in 2023 is expected to reach from $4.3 billion to $4.5 billion in 2023.

According to Nguyễn Thị Phương Dung, director of the Department of Science, Technology and International Cooperation under the Directorate of Fisheries, to overcome the challenges facing the sector and realise the set goals, it is necessary to have the active engagement of relevant parties in the value chain, thus reducing production costs, improving the quality and competitiveness for Vietnamese shrimp products.

Jointly organised by the Vietnam Fisheries Society (VINAFIS) and the Directorate of Fisheries, VietShrimp 2023 will last until April 14. — VNS
