Saving a patient helps the whole family: Top surgeon shares his views

"Curing a patient is helping the whole family." This is the perspective of Dr. Su Jang Wen, who has been pursuing a career in medicine for over 25 years. The leading thoracic surgeon in Singapore also says that "Every effort of a physician will provide additional opportunities for patients to live."
Dr Su Jang Wen - cardiothoracic and lung cancer surgeon from O2 Healthcare Group

Dr. Su – a cardiothoracic and lung cancer surgery expert from O2 Healthcare Group (Singapore) who performs an average of nearly 350 surgeries each year – said that he has not had a holiday in over six years. However, Dr. Su always radiates energy. It’s not just his extraordinary skills that draw admiration, but also his wittiness and the ever-present smile on his gentle face.

Since embarking on his journey as a professional surgeon in 2007, Dr. Su has successfully carried out around 7,000 surgeries involving the lungs, heart and oesophagus. Impressively, more than 95 per cent of these procedures have been performed using Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) – a minimally invasive technique requiring incisions as small as 1.5 to 3cm.

This cutting-edge medical technology has consistently achieved high success rates in treating a range of thoracic conditions, including lung cancer. Remarkably, Dr. Su has maintained an extraordinary record, with a post-surgery mortality rate of 0 per cent in all elective surgeries.

While he is renowned as one of the region’s top thoracic surgeons, many may not realise the immense sacrifices and years of study and dedication it took for Dr. Su to reach these heights.

“If someone were to inquire about how I balance my personal life with my professional responsibilities, I must confess that it is an unattainable goal. I cannot simultaneously seek to rescue every patient in need and pursue personal leisure, such as traveling the world. When faced with the choice between an unforgettable holiday in Beijing and a surgery that could save a life, my decision is obviously predictable. I consistently remind myself that saving a patient equates to helping a whole family,” Dr. Su candidly expressed.

FV Hospital opens new chapter in lung cancer treatment

Dr. Su Jang Wen has observed firsthand the struggles of patients traveling from Việt Nam to Singapore for cancer treatment. These patients endure significant hardships in their quest for survival, navigating a long and financially burdensome journey that is as emotionally taxing as it is costly.

Due to these concerns, Dr. Su sought opportunities to collaborate with healthcare institutions in Việt Nam to bring his expertise to treat Vietnamese patients in their home country. It was through this fortuitous opportunity that Dr. Su chose FV Hospital as the place for him.

“The first time I visited FV Hospital, I knew I wanted to work here. The infrastructure and operational processes at FV are similar to some of the world’s leading medical institutions, meeting international standards in patient care,” Dr. Su said with confidence.

This vision, mission and set of values laid the foundation for the partnership between O2 Healthcare Group – where Dr. Su is based – and FV Hospital, as they work together to develop a regional center of excellence in thoracic surgery in Việt Nam.

According Dr. Su, while Singapore is renowned for its advanced healthcare, the cost of medical care can be prohibitively high. Through this partnership, Vietnamese patients can receive treatment directly from Dr. Su at FV Hospital, with costs reduced by up to 40 per cent compared to treatment in Singapore.

As an international hospital, FV has built its operations and treatment standards based on the best practices of top global medical institutions. These efforts have earned FV a solid reputation and the capability to meet the needs of specialised treatments, particularly advanced cancer therapies such as those for lung cancer. Dr. Su also expressed his trust in the team of doctors at FV's Thoracic Surgery Centre, led by Dr. Luong Ngoc Trung.
