HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Văn Đương advanced to the quarter-finals of the ongoing Asia/Oceania Olympic boxing qualifying tournament on Sunday in Amman, Jordan.

Đương knocked-out Charlie Senior of Australia in the men’s featherweight (52-57kg) category at Prince Hamzah Hall.

He will next face No 3 seed Chatchai Decha Butdee of Thailand, who beat Ian Clark Bautista of the Philippines. Đương is unseeded.

Earlier, three other Vietnamese fighters were eliminated.

Nguyễn Mạnh Cường lost 5-0 to Paulo Aokuso of Australia in the men’s light heavyweight (75-81kg) class.

No 3 seed and Việt Nam's biggest hope Nguyễn Thị Tâm was defeated 4-0 by Chang Yuan of China in the women's flyweight (48-51kg), Nguyễn Thị Hương was trounced 5-0 by Nadezhda Ryabets of Kazakhstan in the women's middleweight (69-75kg). The qualifiers were meant to take place in Wuhan, China, in February, but were postponed and relocated because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Amman has welcomed 221 boxers from 35 countries, fighting for 41 spots in eight divisions from 52kg to over-91kg for men and 22 in five divisions from 51-75kg for women at this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The tournament will end on March 11. VNS
