HÀ NỘI — Rookies Bình Dương pulled off a stunning upset of national championship runners-up Thể Công in the last qualifying round match of Group B of the National Volleyball Championship on Sunday to earn a ticket to compete in the event’s semi-finals.

Bình Dương won 26-24, 25-23, 25-22.

Unknown names in the national events like Trần Anh Tú, Phạm Thoại Khương and Hoàng Xuân Trường helped Bình Dương win.

Bình Dương will take on Nam Sanest Khánh Hòa, who top Group A, while Tràng An Ninh Bình, Group B winner will face HCM City, runners-up of Group A in the semi-finals next week.

Meanwhile on the women’s side, Bình Điền Long An, winners of Group A, will face Quảng Ninh, runners-up of Group B and Lienvietpostbank, Group B winners, will play Vietinbank, Group A runners-up.

The annual event has total prize money of VNĐ436 million (US$18,950), of which the winners will walk away with VNĐ100 million ($4,350).

The event’s top players will be selected for the national team to compete in upcoming international events including the Southeast Asian Games to be held in the Philippines this November. — VNS
