HÀ NỘI — The Việt Nam Football Federation has been fined US$12,500 by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) after fans set off flares at the recent Asian Games (ASIAD) in Indonesia.

The incident occurred during Việt Nam’s 1-3 semi-final defeat to South Korea on August 29.

According to the AFC, Việt Nam violated their code of discipline and ethics and failed to ensure safety and security during the match.

The AFC warned that if Vietnamese fans continue to use flares at international events, stricter discipline will be enforced.

"Next time, Việt Nam will attend the AFF Cup, the 2019 Asian Cup and other tournaments, so I hope the home fans will not be so enthusiastic they affect the VFF and the national team,” Lê Hoài Anh, VFF’s general secretary said.

Earlier, the AFC also fined the VFF $15,000 for failing to stop Vietnamese fans from lighting flares during the 2019 Asian Cup qualifier against Cambodia at Phnom Penh Olympic Stadium last year. — VNS
