HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese athlete Quách Thị Lan made it into the final round of the women’s 400m hurdles after reaching the finish line in second place at Asian Games (ASIAD) in Indonesia on Sunday.
Lan became the runner-up with a total time of 55’74 in the qualification round, following the defending champion in the 400m hurdles in the 2016 Asian Indoor Athletics Champs Oluwakemi Adekoya from Bahrain.
Adekoya crossed the finish line in a total time of 54’87.
With this victory, Adekoya broke this year’s ASIAD record, while Lan broke the national record.
This marks Lan’s best achievement so far in her career, beating the previous national record set by Nguyễn Thị Huyền of 56’06 in last year’s SEA Games 29.
Lan will compete for gold medal with Adekoya in the final round, which will be held today.
In the men’s 400m hurdles, Lan’s older brother, Quách Công Lịch qualified to the semi-final because there were so few athletes competing in the qualification round.
In the women’s long jump, Bùi Thị Thu Thảo also qualified to the final round after some athletes dropped out at the last minute. The event will be held today. — VNS
