HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese rowers secured the country’s first gold medal in the women’s lightweight quadruple sculls event at the Asian Games (ASIAD) 2018 in Indonesia today.

Tạ Thanh Huyền, Lương Thị Thảo, Hồ Thị Ly and Phạm Thị Thảo completed the race in a time of 7:01.11, 3.27 seconds faster than the Iranian runners-up and 5.11 seconds faster than bronze medalists South Korea.

The Vietnamese girls burst into tears at the finish as they quenched Việt Nam’s thirst for gold after four days of competition.

The result was a much needed surprise after the failure of several golden hopes. Rower Nguyễn Thị Hải ended in fifth place in the women’s singles sculls, while Lê Thị Hiền and Phạm Thị Huệ finished last in the women’s pairs event.

The achievement has pushed Việt Nam to 13th position on the medals table. — VNS
