HÀ NỘI — The fifth Hùng Kings Cup championship kicked off in Singapore on May 6 with the participation of 20 football teams representing overseas Vietnamese students, entrepreneurs and intellectuals.

The annual competition is held on the occasion of worshipping the Hùng Kings, the legendary founders of Việt Nam, which falls on the 10th day of the third lunar month every year.

The championship aims to strengthen friendship and closeness among Vietnamese expatriates in Singapore.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vietnamese ambassador to Singapore TàoThị Thanh Hương said the football championship demonstrated the fine tradition of “drinking water, remembering the source”, besides promoting patriotism and helping the young generation have a better understanding of the nation’s glorious history.

Head of the Vietnamese community liaison committee, NguyễnThúyHà, said the football competition was part of activities to remind Vietnamese people living in Singapore about their homeland, creating a healthy playground for Vietnamese students. The committee took the opportunity to launch a donation campaign to support naval soldiers who were fulfilling missions in Việt Nam’s Trường Sa (Spratly) archipelago. The closing ceremony of the football tournament will take place on May 12. — VNS
