HÀ NỘI — Defending champions Đỗ Đức Tuấn and Phạm Như Thảo made the perfect start at the Yonex Canada Open badminton tournament on Wednesday, winning the first round of the mixed doubles.

The Vietnamese pair won 21-13, 21-14 over Peruvians Diego Mini and Paola La Torre Regal. They will next play No. 4 Sam Magee and Chloe Magee of Ireland.

Meanwhile, the women’s duo Vũ Thị Trang and Nguyễn Thị Sen advanced to the next round after winning 21-9, 21-14 against Jacqueline Lima and Samia Lima of Brazil. Their rivals in the second round will be Arisa Higashino and Kie Nakanishi of Japan.

Trang, who was earlier seeded No 6, was ousted in the singles event after she lost 10-21, 10-21 to Japan’s Sayaka Takahashi.

The men’s duo Bảo Minh and Dương Bảo Đức beat Job Castillo and Lino Minoz of Mexico 12-21, 26-24, 21-15. They will now meet Jacco Arends and Ruben Gille of the Netherlands.

Their teammates Đỗ Tuấn Đức and Phạm Hoàng Nam lost 16-21, 11-21 to No. 1 pair Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han of Chinese Taipei.

Phạm Cao Cường won his second match in the men’s singles, beating Sri Lanka’s Buwaneka Goonethilleka. Next, he will face Kenta Nishimoto of Japan. — VNS
