HÀ NỘI — Wild card holder Lý Hoàng Nam of Việt Nam defeated French player Maxime Tabatruong 6-4, 6-4 in the first round match of the Vietnam Open tennis tournament yesterday in HCM City.
He will next play No 8 seed Tatsuma Ito from Japan, who won 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-1 over Indian Vijay Sundar Prashanth.
Last year, Nam was defeated in the first round.
His teammate, Nguyễn Hoàng Thiên, was also ousted from the tournament in an early match.
Thiên, who also received a wild card, was beaten 1-6, 3-6 by qualifier Shuichi Sekiguchi from Japan.
Sekiguchi is world No 395 and has participated in number of ATP Challenger events. Meanwhile Thiên is No 2,002 and could only reach the first stages of the Men’s Futures tournaments.
In the second round, Sekiguchi will play the winner of the match between French Laurent Rocchette and Australian Jordan Thompson.
A surprise occurred in the first day of the main round.
No 1 seed Malek Jaziri of Tunisia was sent home after losing 1-6, 6-3, 6-7 (3) to Yasutaka Uchiyama of Japan.
The Japanese will next play his fellow countryman Arika Santillan, who defeated another Japanese, Hiroki Moriya, 6-4, 6-0.
No 2 seed Dudi Sela of Israel also advanced to the next round, defeating Daniel Masur of Germany 0-6, 6-2, 6-3. — VNS
