Thắng takes bronze at world junior chess championships

Vietnamese chess player Trần Minh Thắng won a bronze medal in the boys’ U16 category of the World Youth Chess Championship 2016 which wrapped up in Khanty-Mansiysk in Russia on Monday.

HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese chess player Trần Minh Thắng won a bronze medal in the boys’ U16 category of the World Youth Chess Championship 2016, which wrapped up in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, on Monday.

After 11 matches, former world U8 champion Thắng had won eight points. Martirosyan Haik M of Armenia won gold with nine points, while Triapishko Olexandr of Russia took silver with 8.5 points.

Eighty-eight chess players took part in the U16 category. With an Elo rating of 2,293, Thắng came into the tournament as the No 36 seed. He had six wins, four draws and one loss.

The tournament attracted 412 players from 42 countries. Việt Nam sent seven players to the event to compete in the U14, U16 and U18 divisions for boys and girls. — VNS
