HÀ NỘI — Vietinbank volleyballer Phạm Thị Kim Huệ has been called up to the national team for the 2016 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Cup for which will be held from September 14-20 in Vĩnh Yên City in the northern province of Vĩnh Phúc.
Huệ, 34, had previously played for the nation team for 13 years. The former captain competed in the Southeast Asian Games six times. She last played for Việt Nam at the VTV Cup in 2013.
“We selected Huệ because of her outstanding performance during the first leg of the 2016 national volleyball championships,” said Lê Trí Trường, general secretary of the Việt Nam Federation of Volleyball.
With the return of Huệ, Việt Nam aim to finish in the event’s top five.
Việt Nam are in Group A with Iran, Chinese Taipei and Thailand. Group B consists of Kazakhstan, South Korea, China and Japan.
The pool stage will be held from September 14 to 16.
Việt Nam face Iran in the curtain-raiser, followed by matches between Thailand and Chinese Taipei, Kazakhstan and Japan in addition to China and South Korea.
The event’s winner will represent Asia at the 2017 World Cup.
China claimed the title in 2008, 2010 and 2014, and are favourites for the prestigious biennial tournament. Việt Nam’s best result in the competition was fourth in Kazakhstan in 2012. — VNS
