HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese marksman Hoàng Xuân Vinh is among the ASEAN athletes to be offered free flights by low-cost airline AirAsia.

Vinh won a gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol event and a silver in the 50m pistol at the Rio Olympics.

AirAsia chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes announced that gold medalists would be entitled to free flights for life, silver medalists would enjoy the travel for five years and bronze medalists for three.

"What an Olympics this was for ASEAN. AirAsia, which has its roots in ASEAN, wants to reward those who gave us so much joy," said Fernandes on Wednesday.

"Also, they taught and reminded us never to give up on your dreams and never stop believing you can be the best in the world," he said.

"Thank you to all the medallists for making us dream and believe.

"We hope it will also encourage others in the region to follow in their footsteps. I look forward to seeing more medals from ASEAN in future games," he added.

Singaporean swimmer Joseph Schooling, Thai weightlifters Sukanya Srisurat and Sopita Tanasan, Indonesian badminton duo Liliyana Natsir and Tontowi Ahmad are among the regional Olympic gold medal winners.
