Karate, jujitsu fighters bring home bronze medals

HÀ NỘI -- Việt Nam secured two bronze medals on the 12th day of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

Karate fighter Đinh Thị Hương defeated Zepanya Ceyco Georgia of Indonesia in the women's 68kg category's third-place playoff match.

It was the first medal for Việt Nam in karate which hoped for gold at the continental sporting competition.

It was also Hương's first medal in her debut Games.

According to head coach Dương Hoàng Long, at this Games, Vietnamese athletes would vie for golds against strong rivals from Japan, Kazakhstan and Jordan.

The golden hope is on former Asian champion Hoàng Thị Mỹ Tâm in the women's 55kg.

She will have to beat the last Games' top three of defending champion Wen Tzu-yun from Chinese Taipei, silver medallist Taravat Khaksar of Iran and bronze medallist Cok Istri Agung Sanistyarani of Indonesia.

Asian jujitsu champion Phùng Thị Huệ took her bronze in the women's 48kg category after beating Sugun Nutchaya of Thailand in the third-place playoff.

Việt Nam has so far won two golds, three silvers and 16 bronze medals to place No 21 in the medal tally.

China proved the sports powerhouse winning 182 golds. Japan with 44 golds are second, followed by South Korea with 34. 

The 19th Asian Games will close on October 8. VNS
