HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam will host the 13th ASEAN School Games (ASG) in August, 2023, in the beach city of Đà Nẵng.

Deputy Prime Minister Vũ Đức Đam signed the decision last week.

It is expected that all 11 regional countries will send their competitors to vie in up to six sports in Việt Nam.

The host Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) will make a final decision about which sports will be played to ensure they are suitable for school students.

The MoET is asked to cooperate with other ministries, authorities and agencies and the Đà Nẵng People's Committee to organise the tournament, the second edition in Việt Nam.

Việt Nam hosted the school games in 2013 in Hà Nội, which lured 1,500 participants from eight countries competing in nine sports.

ASEAN School Games is an annual competition for secondary school student-athletes in the Southeast Asian region and is organised under the authority of the ASEAN Schools Sports Council.

The regional sports council aims to enhance friendship among students, promote solidarity among the youth through school sports and provide opportunities for school athletes to engage in cultural exchange.

The first ASG was hosted by Thailand in 2009. In the last Games in Indonesia in 2019, Việt Nam finished fifth with eight golds. The top three were Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, respectively. VNS
