HÀ NỘI — Thunderstorms at night and early in the morning are forecast in the northern region until Saturday (June 19).

The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting said Hà Nội would experience comfortable temperatures between June 12 and June 14 while the highest temperature was predicted to be 33 degrees Celsius.

The weather was believed to be suitable for students, who will sit for the high-school entrance exam between June 12 and 14.

The centre also said that during the thunderstorms, there was a possibility of lightning, hail and strong winds.

Scattered showers are predicted to hit provinces from Thanh Hoá to Thừa Thiên Huế until next Saturday. Especially, on June 13 and 14, thunderstorms are forecast to hit the provinces.

Scattered thunderstorms are also forecast to hit localities from Đà Nẵng City to Bình Thuận Province; the Central Highlands as well as southern provinces until next Saturday.

In another development, the centre yesterday said that the ultraviolet (UV) index measured yesterday in Đà Nẵng City, Huế City of Thừa Thiên Huế Province and Hội An Town of Quảng Nam Province hit red levels – means very high risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure.

A UV Index reading of 0 to 2 (green) means low danger from the sun's UV rays for the average person. A UV Index reading of 3 to 5 (yellow) means moderate risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure. A UV Index reading of 6 to 7 (orange) means high risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure. A UV Index reading of 8 to 10 (red) means very high risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure. A UV Index reading of 11 or more (violet) means extreme risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure.

The UV index reached 8.3 in Huế City yesterday and could cause harm for people for 11-13 hours while the UV index reached 8.3 in Đà Nẵng City and 8.7 in Hội An Town and could cause harm for people for 10-13 hours, the centre said.

The centre also warned that the UV index in Huế City, Đà Nẵng City and Hội An Town would be lower, at orange level, today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday).

Health experts said to protect their skin when the UV index reaches red, people should avoid going out at noon. People should stay in the shade and wear protective clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, collared jackets, long trousers, and hats to cover their face, neck and ears, as well as apply sunscreen if going out. —VNS
