HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam recorded no new COVID-19 cases on Saturday afternoon, while a critically ill patient was declared free of the virus, the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control announced.

The 51-year-old woman, identified as Patient 604, who tested positive for the virus in early August and was related to the Đà Nẵng outbreak, was given the all-clear from Hoà Vang field hospital in the central city earlier today.

Two weeks earlier, she was still deemed near death’s door with several conditions – including severe pneumonia, heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, and late stage kidney failure.

The recovered patient was transferred to Đà Nẵng Hospital to be treated for her other conditions.

With this latest case, the number of recoveries in Việt Nam reaches 942, out of the country’s total caseload of 1,068.

On Saturday, Việt Nam has gone 17 days without any community transmission cases and notable outbreaks have basically been “under control,” but the committee cautioned that urban centres with dense populations still need to be on guard and practice mask wearing, hand sanitation and avoid large crowds.

The committee’s report said that one patient needs oxygen support, while another is on mechanical ventilation.

More than 30,000 people – who either returned from virus-affected areas or came into close contact with confirmed cases – are under quarantine across the country.

The country’s death toll stands at 35, the majority of them were elderly or suffering from chronic illnesses, with the last coronavirus case succumbing to the disease recorded on September 3.

Three COVID-19 patients who died of pre-existing conditions after testing negative three or four times following treatment, are not included in the official count.

Quảng Nam Province's Department of Health earlier announced that three COVID-19 cases – Patients 526, 597, and 929 – were discharged from Quảng Nam Central General Hospital Saturday morning, after testing negative for the virus three to four times.

They would be isolated at their residence for another 14 days and tested two more times before they could return to normal life.

The three have not been accounted for in the afternoon report by the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control .
