VN wins big at international math competition

HÀ NỘI — All 36 Vietnamese students won prizes at the 2018 World Mathematics Team Championship (WMTC) held in Varna, Bulgaria from November 19 -26.

They brought home a total of nine gold, 13 silver, and 13 bronze medals, and a consolation prize.

One notable contestant was Vũ Hồng Phúc, 8th grader from Cầu Giấy Junior High School, who ranked 3rd in the competition’s individual event.

In the team category, teams from Giảng Võ and Cầu Giấy Junior High School were listed among those achieving the highest scores in the competition. Of those, the group from Cấu Giấy Junior High School ranked third.

The WMTC 2018 attracted a total of 387 candidates in 67 teams representing 16 countries and territories from around the world.

This year, Việt Nam sent 36 students from both primary and secondary schools in Hoàn Kiếm, Ba Đình, and Cầu Giấy districts to the competition.

First launched in 2010, the WMTC offers an opportunity for students to compete, develop teamwork skills and share experience and culture through tours and other academic and cultural activities. — VNS
