THỪA THIÊN-HUẾ — Police in the central province of Thừa Thiên-Huế on Monday afternoon announced the death of two Dutch nationals.

According to police, Amoldus Crnelis Joannes Goedhart and Dirk Wapstra, both from Holland, drowned in the sea off Lăng Cô beach in the province’s Phú Lộc District.

Witnesses said the two were travelling to Huế from Hội An on Monday with a group of 21 tourists when they stopped at the Làng Cò Resort and registered to swim. The two men rushed into the sea despite warnings from staff of strong waves.

The two were caught in a riptide and swept far from the coast. By the time rescuers managed to reach Goedhart he was already dead. Wapstra’s body was pulled from the water some hours later by local fishermen.

The bodies were taken to the provincial hospital where local authorities are working with the Dutch embassy to notify their families.

The province has experienced rough seas recently as a result of typhoon Toraji, and local beach resorts have warned swimmers about the dangers. — VNS
