ĐẮK LẮK —The Department of Animal Health and Husbandry in the Tây Nguyên (Central Highland) province of Đắk Lắk on Wednesday culled 2,500 ducks infected with the A/H5N6 bird flu virus.
Trần Cao Khải, deputy chairman of the department, said the ducks belonged to Lê Thị Sáu from Krông Bông District.
Sáu said the ducks had stopped eating and fallen ill. Of her 3,000 ducks, she estimated that 50 to 100 had died.
Krông Bông District’s breeding and veterinary station took samples at Sáu’s farm and sent them to the department, which found that the ducks tested positive for the A/H5N6 virus.
The department worked with the People’s Committee of Krông Bông District to cull all the infected ducks and examined surrounding farms to prevent an outbreak.
This was the first outbreak of A/H5N6 in the province this year.
The provincial department has told farmers to have all their poultry vaccinated for avian influenza.— VNS
