HCM CITY — WAD Library, the first in HCM City meant for autistic youths, opened on Sunday in Phú Nhuận District.
It aims to create a safe reading space and reading sources appropriate for autistic kids and young adults aged from six to 20 years old.
Đặng Thúy Hồng, founder of the library, said there is a lack of reading space for autistic children as well as books, comic books, and other reading materials for kids and their parents.
The library is a place where children with autism can come and learn, have fun, make friends and develop skills like other people at their age, Hồng said.
It would also help the community understand autism more correctly and consequently treat young people with autism with the appropriate affection and sympathy, she said.
It is the second project of the We Are Different Club, a non-profit organisation for autistic people that was selected as one of the five top projects of UPSHIFT, a programme supporting community projects by UNICEF and VYE (Viet Youth Entrepreneurs) in 2017. — VNS
