HÀ NỘI — A tropical depression formed in the East Sea developed into this year’s first area storm on Sunday afternoon, according to the National Hydro-meteorological Forecast Centre.

The storm was located 450km to the east of the Hoàng Sa (Paracel) Archipelago by 1pm on Sunday.

It will cause rain showers, thunderstorms, tornadoes and strong winds in the southern area of the East Sea, including the waters off the Trường Sa (Spartly) Archipelago, Việt Nam’s Ninh Thuận, Cà Mau, Kiên Giang coastal provinces, and the Gulf of Thailand.

In the next 24 hours the storm is expected to move west-by-northwest at 20km per hour and will be some 200km to the southeast of China by 1pm today, with a medium wind force level of 6, triggering large waves.

In the next 24 hours to 48 hours, it will reach the mainland of China’s coastal province of Guangdong and revert to a tropical depression. — VNS
