HÀ NỘI — The Criminal Investigation Police Department has joined forces with police in the northern province of Bắc Ninh to detain a group of people for threatening the chairman of the provincial People’s Committee and several other officials, Major General Hồ Sỹ Tiến, director of the department, announced Saturday.

Last month, deputy chairman of the Bắc Ninh People’s Committee, Nguyễn Hữu Thành, sent a letter to Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc and Minister of Transport Trương Quang Nghĩa informing them that he and other officials had been threatened for ending a sand dredging project in the Cầu River.

The Prime Minister asked the Ministry of Public Security to investigate and report back to him by the end of last month. The arrests appear to be the result of the investigation.

As reported by tuoitrenews.vn, three sand exploitation projects along the waterway were approved in 2014 and executed by the Vietnam Inland Waterways Administration (VIWA).

But Hạ Lưu Company, the contractor hired by VIWA to carry out one of the three, was found to be taking advantage of the project to illegally exploit sand, causing serious damage to local dams and riverbanks. — VNS
