HCM CITY — HCM City Party Committee Secretary Đinh La Thăng has opined that the bad odour shrouding the southern part of the city is caused by the Đa Phước Waste Treatment Complex in Bình Chánh District.

The Party Committee said in a release following his recent visit to the waste treatment complex that he has however instructed the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to find the cause of and solutions to the problem.

He also called for planting more trees near Đa Phước, upgrade its treatment technologies and speed up construction of a new waste treatment facility in neighbouring Long An Province.

Đa Phước receives more than 5,000 tonnes of rubbish every day.

Thăng said the long-term solution to eliminating the smell is to upgrade waste treatment technologies so that garbage is treated rather than disposed off in landfills.

According to reports from authorities in Bình Chánh, Nhà Bè, and 7 districts, the odour worsens during the rainy season every year.

This year the situation has been particularly bad, with the smell being worse and more widespread than ever, they added.

During his inspection of Đa Phước, Thăng said, he found the smell emanating from the dump site and a pond containing wastewater operated by the Việt Nam Waste Solution Company.

Following recent public complaints that the smell affected their day-to-day life, Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc instructed the city administration to act.

The issue will be discussed at the upcoming monthly meeting of the city administration. — VNS
