HÀ NỘI (VNS) — A charity text-message campaign has been launched today to raise funds for people affected by drought and salt intrusion in the Central, Central Highlands and Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta regions.

The campaign, titled “Fresh water and livelihood for people affected by drought and salt intrusion,” was co-organised by the Việt Nam Red Cross Society (VNRC) and the HCM City-based Tuổi trẻ (Youth) newspaper.

People from all walks of life can support the campaign by texting NC to 1407. The campaign will run until June 5. Each mobile text message will add VNĐ14,000 (US$0.6) to the fund.

Donations will be used to buy clean water and water tanks and offer livelihood support to people living in drought and salt intrusion-hit areas of the affected regions.

The VNRC said large-scale drought and salt intrusion had greatly affected the lives and agricultural production of millions of residents in many provinces and cities across Việt Nam. Fourteen provinces have officially announced a crisis situation and have adopted many urgent measures to support residents in overcoming these difficulties.

In March, VNRC released nearly VNĐ5.4 billion ($240,000) in emergency aid to help 14,000 affected families in these 14 provinces. — VNS
