HƯNG YÊN — Across Hưng Yên Province, schools named after Lê Quý Đôn, one of Việt Nam's greatest cultural figures and the country's foremost 18th-century scholar, are carrying forward his enduring legacy by nurturing a love of learning, inspiring ambition and helping shape the character of younger generations.
Born in 1726 in what is now Lê Quý Đôn Commune in Hưng Yên Province, the renowned scholar whose childhood name was Lê Danh Phương is remembered as one of Việt Nam's greatest polymaths. Beyond his vast knowledge across numerous fields, he left future generations a profound intellectual legacy centred on lifelong learning, self-directed study and the responsibility of scholars to serve the nation.
Named after Lê Quý Đôn's childhood name, Lê Danh Phương Secondary School in Hưng Hà Commune has, for many years, been recognised as one of the province's leading schools.
According to Vice Principal Nguyễn Thị Tân, teachers and students have worked tirelessly to maintain the school's reputation for academic excellence.
Since the 2018–19 academic year, the school has been recognised as an Outstanding Labour Collective for six consecutive years. It has consistently achieved strong results in both general education and gifted education, with one of the highest admission rates to public upper secondary schools in its educational cluster.
English has remained its strongest subject for many years, while numerous students have earned places at specialised upper secondary schools both within and outside the province, she said.
The school also boasts a highly qualified teaching staff committed to modernising classroom instruction and accelerating digital transformation, helping create a safe, innovative and culturally rich learning environment.
Bringing history into the classroom
Having taught at Lê Danh Phương Secondary School for more than two decades, teacher Nguyễn Kiều Hoa said the school develops a detailed education plan at the beginning of every academic year, with particular emphasis on programmes that promote local history and cultivate pride in the legacy of Lê Quý Đôn.

His life, ideas and intellectual achievements are integrated into a wide range of subjects, including literature, history, local geography and the arts, allowing students to engage with his legacy in ways that are both vivid and relevant.
Beyond classroom lessons, students regularly visit the Lê Quý Đôn Memorial Site in Lê Quý Đôn Commune. These field trips give them the opportunity to learn firsthand about the scholar's life and achievements while gaining a deeper appreciation of his commitment to learning, self-improvement and public service.
For Trần Hạ Thiên Vân, an eighth-grade student, studying at a school bearing the scholar's childhood name is a source of pride.
"Lê Quý Đôn is not only a symbol of wisdom but also an inspiring example of lifelong learning and patriotism for younger generations," she said.
Vice Principal Nguyễn Thị Tân said preserving and promoting the intellectual and educational values of Lê Quý Đôn has become a central part of the school's mission. In addition to classroom instruction, students participate in extracurricular activities, history-themed programmes and school assemblies featuring discussions of the scholar's works and ideas, helping bring traditional cultural values closer to everyday learning.
Keeping a legacy alive
The same philosophy is embraced at Lê Quý Đôn Primary and Secondary School in Lê Quý Đôn Commune, where promoting cultural values is regarded as an integral part of education.
Principal Nguyễn Đình Anh said the school works to ensure that teachers, staff and students fully understand both the honour and the responsibility of studying and working at a school bearing the name of one of the nation's greatest scholars.
"The spirit of curiosity, creativity and dedication embodied by Lê Quý Đôn has become a daily source of motivation for both teachers and students," he said.
The school has focused on modernising teaching methods, developing students' competencies and character, and strengthening traditional education alongside life skills, with the goal of nurturing young people who are both capable and socially responsible.

Looking ahead, the school plans to continue investing in educational facilities and equipment while further promoting student-centred, holistic education that supports intellectual, moral, physical and aesthetic development.
As part of activities marking the 300th birth anniversary of Lê Quý Đôn, the school will organise a series of experiential programmes and thematic lessons to deepen students' understanding of his life and legacy, while fostering pride in their cultural heritage and a sense of responsibility to carry his values forward.
Hưng Yên Province is home to around ten schools named after Lê Quý Đôn. More than places of learning, these schools have become living symbols of his educational philosophy, inspiring generations of students to pursue knowledge, cultivate strong character and strive to contribute to society.
