HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam's aviation authorities have launched an investigation into unauthorised drone incursions in the northern province of Thanh Hóa after aerial objects were detected at Thọ Xuân Airport over the weekends, reportedly causing severe disruptions to a number of flights.
On Monday, Thọ Xuân Airport's authorities said the airport would pause reception of aircrafts in 12 hours, from 6pm June 16 until 6am June 17 – meaning all flights from and to Thanh Hoá will need to be rescheduled.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Việt Nam(CAAV) described the incidents as complex and posing a significant threat to civil aviation. The CAAV has assigned the Northern Airports Authority to lead the investigation and report its findings.
The CAAV has also issued an urgent directive ordering Thọ Xuân Airport and its Runway Safety Team to step up coordination with air traffic controllers, airport security and other relevant agencies to ensure a rapid response to any future incursions.
Local authorities have been instructed to enhance public awareness campaigns in surrounding communities, emphasising aviation safety and legal regulations on drone use near airports.
Additional measures include frequent inspections of runway areas during flight operations and coordinated risk assessments to prevent similar incidents.
The CAAV has also called on local authorities to work closely with airport officials to identify and prosecute those responsible for the illegal drone activity.
Immediately following the CAAV’s directive, the Northern Airports Authority held an emergency meeting to address the situation.
Local authorities, airport authorities, along with the air defence unit, have started coordinating to look for the people who controlled the illegal drones. — VNS
