HCM CITY — The Cà Mau Centre for Disease Control (CDC) has confirmed the first case of mpox in the southernmost province of Cà Mau.

A 36-year-old patient recently sought outpatient treatment at Cần Thơ Dermatology Hospital after showing symptoms similar to those of mpox. The HCM City Pasteur Institute later confirmed that the patient tested positive for mpox.

The patient’s family, including parents who recently returned from abroad and two siblings living in Nguyễn Phích Commune in U Minh District, are also under epidemic surveillance.

Nguyễn Quan Phú, deputy director of Cà Mau CDC, said the Cà Mau CDC is increasing disinfection efforts, conducting epidemiological investigations, and implementing isolation and treatment measures for potential new cases.

The provincial People’s Committee has issued a directive to enhance prevention and control efforts, urging proactive monitoring and early detection, he said.

The provincial Health Department will investigate close contacts, manage outbreaks, and prevent the spread of the disease, he added.

It will also provide training for healthcare personnel, prepare medicines and equipment, and strengthen prevention and control measures.

The Cà Mau CDC will provide information, advice, and support for those seeking medical care.

In addition, the Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development, Health, and other relevant units will collaborate to prevent and control diseases that come from wildlife.
