THANH HÓA — Police in central Thanh Hóa Province began legal proceedings in 2,528 criminal cases and against 4,788 defendants in 2023 with increasing number of hi-tech crimes, according to the provincial People’s Procuracy.

The number of gambling crimes has decreased significantly by 87 cases and 445 defendants compared to 2022, said the People’s Procuracy.

Lê Văn Đông, director of Thanh Hóa provincial People's Procuracy, said in spite of declining number of cases, the criminals’ tricks are becoming increasingly sophisticated. In addition to traditional forms of gambling, there is now a type of cyber-gambling crime that is difficult to control on a large scale.

Gamblers only need internet connection to easily access to any gambling website, follow the instructions and gamble online in any area or territory, he said.

Police have also cracked down on criminals lending at high interest rates in civil transactions or so-called black credit.

The number of busted cases has increased compared to the previous year.

The provincial investigation agency has prosecuted 18 corruption cases and 35 defendants.

People who commit crimes are qualified people holding positions, many of whom are Party members. Criminal acts involve many levels and sectors and occur not only at State agencies and organisations but also in the private sector, according to the police. — VNS
