HCM CITY — IELTS students in Việt Nam over the past five years are getting younger, with research in 2022 showing that 62 per cent of IELTS students are between the ages of 16 and 22. This group accounted for only 15 per cent of such students in 2018, according to the KTDC IELTS Training Centre.
Accordingly, the number of students investing in learning IELTS has had a fourfold increase.
In fact, the percentage of students in need of IELTS increased significantly from late 2021 to 2022, and increased only slightly in previous years.
The reason for this trend is due to the fact that a series of prestigious universities across the country have changed their university admission policies to include international certificates, including IELTS. While 2018 witnessed only a small scale change in admission regulations, 2021-2022 was when universities put IELTS into the official admission matrix.
Strong demand to take the IELTS exam had already existed before, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that IELTS craze had somewhat subsided before exploding strongly again. The pandemic had greatly reduced the demand for studying IELTS for the purpose of studying abroad. Now that society has mostly returned to normalcy, the demand for studying IELTS has surged.
Nowadays, IELTS has become a "golden ticket" for those who need to demonstrate their English proficiency to apply to universities both domestically and internationally. Along with the changes in university admission policies in HCM City and throughout the country, the trend of studying IELTS is also changing.
