Việt Nam among countries leading the world for women in politics

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam is among countries leading the world for women in politics, according to a recent report of the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.

Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Đào Ngọc Dung recently presented to the National Assembly a report on Việt Nam’s achievements in gender equality in 2022 with key statistics on Vietnamese female political leaders.

Việt Nam’s high position was achieved thanks to the proportion of women at elected bodies.

About 30 per cent of the 15th tenure National Assembly’s deputies are female, an increase of 3.5 percentage points compared to the previous term.

The proportion of women participating in the people's councils at provincial and district levels has reached 29 per cent.

As of December 2022, half of ministries, Governmental and Government-level agencies have women in their key leader teams.

Việt Nam has three female ministers – Minister of Home Affairs Phạm Thị Thanh Trà, Minister of Health Đào Hồng Lan and Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam Nguyễn Thị Hồng.

Among Government-level agencies, there is one female leader who is Vũ Việt Trang – Vietnam News Agency general director.

There are also 12 other deputy ministers and same level positions.

Approximately 60 per cent of key leaders at the Governmental-level agencies are female. Meanwhile, the number of Governmental agencies which have female key leaders remains humble, according to the report.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, as of March 2023, 19 members of the 13th tenure’s Party Central Committee are female, accounting for 9.5 per cent.

Those include Trương Thị Mai and Bùi Thị Minh Hoài, members of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat and Vice President Võ Thị Ánh Xuân.

There are three women in the National Assembly (NA)’s Standing Committee and 34 female deputy chairpersons and permanent members of NA committees and agencies.

Sixteen per cent of members of the provincial Party committees in the 2020-25 tenure are women including seven Party secretaries and 15 deputy secretaries.

Among 263 provincial leaders, there are 24 women including two chairwomen and 22 deputy chairwomen of provincial people’s committees. — VNS
