HÀ NỘI — The Việt Nam Red Cross Society (VNRC) donated US$200,000 to the Turkish Red Crescent Association and the Syrian Red Crescent Association to support the two countries’ people overcoming the consequences of earthquakes last month.
At the event on March 9 in Hà Nội, VNRC President Bùi Thị Hòa handed over $100,000 to the Turkish Red Crescent Society through the Turkish Embassy in Việt Nam. Then VNRC also donated $100,000 to the Syrian Red Crescent Society through the International Association of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
"The greatest value of the Vietnamese people is compassion, sharing and helping each other. Besides the people of Turkey and Syria, there are also the people of Việt Nam and the world joining hands to support and help earthquake victims overcome difficulties caused by the earthquakes,” said Hòa.
Hòa also thanked the support of ministries, agencies, organisations, individuals and communities at home and abroad.
On February 17, the VNRC called on the community to support the people impacted by the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Responding to the VNRC’s call, many ministries, branches, local and international organisations and businesses, armed forces and the Red Cross societies at all levels across the country have mobilised cadres, civil servants, public employees, workers, students, Red Cross members and volunteers, who donated and supported in various forms.
As of March 6, the VNRC has received financial and material support worth over VNĐ12 billion and goods including warm clothes, blankets and t-shirts.

At the event, the VNRC also received support from a number of Red Cross societies and businesses, including Samsung Electronics Vietnam SEV/SEVT's employees, the Investment and Trading Consulting Co., Ltd (INTRACO), Vietnam Garment Manufacturing Company Limited of the TAL APPAREL Group, Garment 10 Corporation, the Association to Support Families of Vietnamese Martyrs, Deloitte Vietnam, Bắc Giang LGG Garment Corporation, the Red Cross societies of Hà Nội, Nam Định, Bến Tre Province, Bắc Giang and the city of Hải Phòng with a total amount of money and goods worth more than VNĐ4 billion.
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck on February 6 in southeast Turkey and northeast Syria, killing more than 50,000 people. It was one of the most destructive earthquake disasters to hit the region in nearly a century, destroying thousands of homes and causing catastrophic damage and economic losses of tens of billions of dollars.
The VNRC will continue to receive support to help the people of Turkey and Syria overcome the consequences of the earthquake until May 30, 2023. — VNS
